GPRS: General Packet Radio Service

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet-data technology that allows GSM operators to launch wireless data services, such as e-mail and Internet access. As a result, GPRS provides operators with the ability to use data to drive additional revenue. GPRS is often called a 2.5G technology because it is a GSM operator’s first step toward third generation (3G) and a first step in wireless data services.

gprs

Although GPRS is a data-only technology, it helps improve GSM voice capacity. When an operator deploys GPRS, it also can upgrade to a vocoder, a new type of voice coder that turns voice into digital signals before they pass across the wireless network. The vocoder uses Adaptive Multi-rate speech transcoding (AMR) technology, which can handle twice as many simultaneous voice calls as a network that uses the old vocoder. As a result, GPRS allows GSM operators to accommodate additional voice traffic without the expense of acquiring additional spectrum.
GPRS supports peak download data rates of up to 115 kbps, with average speeds of 40 to 50 kbps, which is comparable to other 2.5G technologies, such as CDMA2000 1x. GPRS speeds are fast enough for applications such as Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and a web browsing experience comparable to a wired dial-up modem. GPRS also allows customers to maintain a data session while answering a phone call, which is a unique and exclusive feature to GSM. GPRS also provides an always-on data connection, so users do not have to log on each time they want data access. The packet architecture also means that users pay only for the data itself rather than for the airtime used to establish a connection and download data.
GPRS is the most widely supported packet-data wireless technology in the world. Like GSM, GPRS supports international roaming so customers can access data services whether they are at home or abroad. When users travel to areas that have not yet been upgraded to GPRS, they still can access many data services via circuit-switched GSM.
The significant global operator and user adoption of GPRS has created a customer base that has attracted dozens of device manufacturers. As a result, thousands of models of GPRS phones and PC card modems are currently available. In fact, virtually all GSM model devices have GPRS.
GPRS builds on the GSM network platform, so operators can leverage their existing infrastructure, such as base stations and Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs). The GPRS core network is based on Internet Protocol (IP) standards, which make it ideal for providing wireless access to other IP-based networks, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and corporate Local Area Networks (LANs). The GPRS core also serves as the foundation for all subsequent steps toward 3G. For example, when operators deploy EDGE and UMTS-HSPA, they reuse GPRS core elements such as Gateway GPRS Support Nodes (GGSNs); this design ensures that each step in the migration to 3G is smooth and cost-effective.

Graphic Design Trends

trend

Graphic design is about as energetic of a field as any art form – always changing and developing, while certain styles remain “classic” and “always in.”  I paused my normal hectic schedule of graphic design work to reflect on this today so I could offer you a few graphic design trends that are currently “hot.”

Graphic Design Trends

1) Versatile Design

Today’s marketing isn’t just billboards, posters, and pamphlets.  It’s web, mobile phones, digital signage, videos and environmental designs.  The best ad campaigns include versatile graphic design that is recognizable across both the old and new advertising spaces: print and digital.  It’s important to design with the “repurposing” in mind. For the most part this means formulating a clear focused message that can be relayed large or small and with either few words or lots of copy.

Everyone sees the Geico gecko on the TV ads, and then driving down the highway, there he is waving from a billboard; and he’s on the website; and I’m sure he’s on the app, I just haven’t checked.  Simply put – that’s repurposing: a versatility that is consistent and easily recognized across the board, including today’s ever changing new media.

2) Large Web Design

Here is an example of that versatile mind set in practice.

Today’s websites often opt for a more straightforward, tastefully larger approach.  Why is that?  Larger is more popular simply because electronic devices are smaller: mobile phones, iPads and other tablets.  Big buttons, large banners all make it easy for the growing number of mobile internet users to easily navigate and convert on a website.  Can’t read it?  Gone.  Just like that.

There are mobile versions of websites that load automatically when they detect usage by a mobile device, but more often the company doesn’t have a separate mobile site in the budget. In my opinion I find most mobile sites to be handled as if they were hindrances or afterthoughts anyways. I’m generally feel unfamiliar how to navigate them. And perhaps what I find most aggrevating, what I’m looking for usally didn’t make the mobile content cut and is unavalible for the mobile site. This is why I usually opt to “view the full site.” Fortunately this is all avoidable with a little preplanning on the designers end. He or she will have mobile, tablet, and desktop users in mind while opting to create larger more prominent features.  Plain and simple, or shall we say, large and in charge.

3) Conceptual Design

An incredible amount of effort is put into the idea/concept compared to just designing to market a particular product, service, low price, best quality, location, etc. Conceptual design is meant to abruptly stop the magazine page flipper in there tracks. It means formulating concepts and creating visuals that evoke human response. They will often pull heartstrings (emotional), tickle ribs (humor), or drop jaws (informative).

The idea behind this approach of design is that the message is louder than the design itself – it’s thought provoking and makes you interpret the message. Conceptually designs are particularly evident in nonprofits. Visit adcouncil.org for several phenomenal examples.

Moving on…

4) Informative Design

Mainly, infographics: popular new design work explaining a simple or often complex study of some sort.  For examples, take a look at Cowley’s Pinterest Board “Great Infographics.”.

These are especially popular among SEO’s (search engine optimization specialists) because they are highly effective pieces of link bait effective in producing a ton of back links for the website who publishes them.  What does this mean? (For a refresher on SEO)  I share something interesting on the internet, then people will copy the link to that object and share it all over social media and other websites, bringing immense amounts of traffic to me via this image.  It’s done all the time and is extremely effective.  These things go viral.  See how many we got being passed around on Pinterest for example.

There are definitely the good, bad, and ugly among infographics; but the simple vector style artwork is mesmerizing and extremely easy on the eyes.  The ones that are most effective show and don’t tell.  There are some terrible ones that just list stats.  Some are truly awful, as in all “art.”

However, in broad brush strokes, we are speaking about that kind of design, not necessarily “infographics” per se: the long blocks of design shared on Pinterest and the like. Rather, we are speaking in broad terms of the style of the artwork.  These graphics are recognizable with their very strong vector style and limited color palette.  The result can be a thing of beauty.  It reminds one of the intro to a Pixar movie (think Monsters, Inc.) or perhaps the opening credit sequence in Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can.  It’s the designer saying: “I’ll tell you all about it, but in pictures.”

Cowley recently did a beautiful website redesign for InnerActive Wellness and employed some stunning yet simple infographics-esque images to explain what the company was all about.  We also animated them to give them that extra spark.

5) Typographic Design

Typography reaches far beyond the font list under the type menu on the computer. It is far too easy to simply type out words, choose a typeface and go. Typography encompasses the reality of effective design. It dictates the success in the design’s identity. Fonts can convey a message themselves. They have personalities, characteristics, and can either take the design right on track or down a road that you don’t desire.

The sheer number of fonts available today is simply out of this world. 10 years ago, there were just a couple hundred or so to work with.  Today, new fonts are produced without end every single day; and via the ever more open source (internet), they are shared for all to use. So choose wisely.

In some case typographic design can make up an ad in itself. With some time and effort put forth to the layout, manipulation, texturing, shadowing, and/or simply concentration on good typography practices, a really powerful ad can be created. Below are some examples of some really cool typographic designs.

‘Inbound Marketing’ for your business

effective-marketing-strategies

Inbound marketing is based on the concept of earning the attention of prospects, making yourself easy to be found and drawing customers to your website by producing content customers value. Blogs, podcasts, video, eBooks, enewsletters, whitepapers, SEO, social media marketing and other form of content marketing are considered Inbound marketing. In contrast, buying attention, cold-calling, direct paper mail, radio, TV advertisements, sales fliers, spam, telemarketing are considered ” outbound marketing.” Inbound marketing is especially effective for small businesses that deal with high dollar values, long research cycles and knowledge-based products. In these areas prospects are more likely to get informed and hire someone who demonstrates expertise

A newer model illustrates the concept in five stages:

  1. Attract Traffic
  2. Convert visitors to leads
  3. Convert leads to sales
  4. Turn customers into repeat higher margin customers
  5. Analyze for continuous improvement

Inbound marketing was founded on the basis that traditional marketing and advertising like billboards and TV spots have become less effective. One infographic showed that 86 percent of viewers skip commercials and 44 percent of recipients never open direct mail. In contrast companies that blog have 50 percent more website visitors than those that don’t and inbound marketing leads cost 60 percent less on average. One criticism of inbound marketing is the time and effort required to create content.Inbound marketing may also reflect changes in the customer buy cycle. Whereas customers use to engage vendors very early in the buy cycle, customers conduct online research and contact the vendor closer to the moment of making a decision. in this way, customers become more informed on their own and sales teams are used more efficiently.

Get More Leads with Linkedin Announcements

LinkedIn is 177% more effective than Twitter and Facebook. What people are having trouble, is guessing how.

The tricky thing with LinkedIn is that there isn’t just one single place to attract leads. There’s LinkedIn Company Pages, LinkedIn Answers, LinkedIn Today, and so on. But the leader of the pack — if done right, of course – is Linkedin Groups, which are open to the public to join and learn!

There are many benefits to building your own LinkedIn Group, the awesome one is LinkedIn Announcements. If you’ve never heard of LinkedIn Announcements, think of it kind of like a social media and email marketing mash up.

LinkedIn Announcements are messages sent directly to the email inbox of the members of your LinkedIn Group — in other words, it’s email marketing through LinkedIn! Whichever email a LinkedIn user includes on their profile will receive the LinkedIn Announcement.

Lead Generation for your Business

Show off with humility

Nobody likes a smarter. But people do like clever, professional and helpful people who will freely give away a little of the knowledge and experience. Make your website a place where you give freely, and don’t talk about yourself.

Jump in to social media

If you haven’t grown up in the digital world social media can be a difficult thing to grasp, so start off with the basics and go from there. If you are a B2B business, join LinkedIn, build your connections and start showing off with humility in the groups and answers section.

What’s in it for me?

Website visitors are a fickle and lazy bunch, and generally they are all seeking the answer to a single question (whether they know it or not!) They all want to know “What’s in it for me?” So tell them. Using your knowledge of your clients, work out what questions your web visitors will have on any given page on your website. Tell your website visitors what is in it for them to make the next step towards becoming a client.

People are magpies

Magpies are attracted to sparkly, shiney things and so are website visitors. If you want to draw attention to one of your offers make it stand out from your design. WARNING: graphic designers and artistically inclined people will balk at this idea. You have a choice: either create an aesthetic statement with your website, or one which will (metaphorically) poke a finger in their eye so they take notice of you. Lead generating websites tend to be eye-pokers.

Become a data-junkie

Sadly Google analytics is not enough. To effectively harvest the maximum number of leads from your website you need to know what’s happening in fine detail. You need to recognise patterns of behavior and react to it. Do you know when a second, fifth or nineteenth conversion event happens with a particular lead? Do you know instantly when a lead revisits your website?

Let your personality shine through

I always know when I’ve achieved success with a client’s marketing project because their personality starts to shine through their website, and in fact all of their marketing efforts. I’ve often heard the phrase ‘people buy people’ but maybe it is more accurate to say ‘people buy personalities,’ and you can do that via a website!

How to use Twitter for Business

Twitter is a tool for “micro-blogging” or posting very short updates, comments or thoughts.  In fact, since Twitter was designed to be very compatible with mobile phones through text messages, each update is limited to 140 characters.  Truly, a micro-blog.  Another way to think of Twitter is like a cross between instant messaging (IM) and a chat room, because it is an open forum, but you restrict it to the people with which you connect.

I have to admit I have not always been sold on Twitter.  At first I did not get it at all.  Then I thought I understood it, but thought it was stupid and useless.  Then I used it a bit more and got some more followers and followed a few more people.  Now I think it has some value, especially as a marketing and PR tool.

1- Twitter is actually perfect for CEO or founder who is always on the road meeting with people and who has some interesting opinions on your market.

2- This is a way easier to connect with influential people in the media than calling and emailing them

3- If you are a retailer or anyone who often has special offers, you can use Twitter to announce these deals instantly to a large audience

4- Its really easy to post a link to something in Twitter, and I often post links to blog articles on this blog, or other news articles relevant to Wael Tech.

Graphic Design

Graphic design is the art of communication, stylizing, and problem-solving through the use of graphics. The field is also often erroneously referred to as Visual Communication or Communication Design due to overlapping skills involved. Graphic designers use various methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of , visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, organized text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements. Graphic_Design

Keywords for your SEO strategy

Keyword-Tool-External-Keyword-Tools

The keywords you use in your website play a vital part in helping customers to find your site, and in helping the search engines to understand your website content and place your site in its search listings. Making sure you are using the right keywords is hugely important to search engine optimization (SEO). By taking the time to research your keywords and choose the most relevant and popular phrases for use in your site, you could see your site rise up the search rankings, becoming far more accessible to your customers and hopefully generating business for your company.

Researching and choosing keywords

Strong keywords are typically that which are highly relevant to your business and receive many searches by search engine users each month, but which do not have too much competition for their use. There are many different tools for keyword research available on the webs which are free and very easy to use – a good example is Google’s own keyword tool. By entering a keyword phrase into the keyword tool, you can see how many people are searching for that phrase each month, how much competition there is to rank for that phrase, and what similar phrases are also being used. Taking the time to check your keywords will ensure you have a great chance at achieving a good search result rank.

Research and update your keywords to keep your site well optimized

To make sure your business website stays ahead of the game, carry out regular research into your current keywords and any alternatives you might wish to rank for, and update your site to reflect this.
